Front cover features full length portrait of Lincoln’s war-time Secretary of State, who was nearly assassinated by J. Wilkes Booth’s fellow conspirator, Lewis Payne, with accompanying story on page two. Other illustrations include an attractive portrait of W.T. Sherman, two sketches depicting “The clothes In Which Davis Disguised Himself” [during his attempt to escape capture, and a group photo of the “Officer Engaged in the Capture of Davis”—[from a photo by Alexander Gardiner}. Plus, sketches of “Rebel Soldiers Taking the Oath of Allegiance In The Senate Chamber at Richmond, Virginia”, and former Union prisoner amputees.
Exhibits mounting dots and light chipping along left margin, w/faint fold-lines. Slight interior margin tear. Else VG, w/smooth cover. Solid issue, w/cover portrait. [War coverage still dominated Harper’s Weekly through the summer of 1865 and coverage of the trial of the Lincoln conspirators]. In protective sleeve, w/white card backing. [JP]
