Front cover features portrait sketches of Major General Buell and Brigadier General Shields, and panoramic illustration of a “Bomb-Proof Sand-Bag Battery at Newbern, North Carolina, Taken by General Burnside’s Troops.” Interior illustrations include a full page montage of “Views at New Madrid and Point Pleasant”, and a page of the Burnside expedition’s “Bombardment of New Bern, North Carolina.” Also a dramatic double-page centerfold depicting the Battle of Winchester: “Decisive Charge Upon the Rebels at The Stone Wall.” Plus three excellent rear cover cartoons.
