Funeral of President Lincoln – His remains are in the White House. Interesting details:

“The body has laid in State in the White House, in a coffin covered with black cloth and lined with lead, the latter being covered with white satin. A silver plate on the coffin, over the breast, bears the following:

“Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, Born July 12 1809, Died April 15, 1865.

“The remains have been embalmed. A few locks of hair were removed from the President’s head for the family previous to his remains being placed in the coffin.

“The countenance presents a natural appearance, although rather discolored about the eyes and the left side of the forehead. His whiskers remain as he wore them of late, and his hair is combed straight back.”

Assassination of President Lincoln – Attempted Murder of Secretary Seward – long and excellent article detailing the events at Ford’s Theatre.  Mrs Lincoln’s screams, onlookers and help rushing to Lincoln’s box. Laura Keene the actress seeing Booth escape. Someone leans out of the box and yells –‘does anyone have any brandy?” The theater emptied. Someone brings water to Lincoln.

Laura Keene the actress cradles Lincoln’s head on her lap and attempts to give him water down his throat. “but even then he was wholly unconscious, and his breathing was rattling and noisy”

Lincoln is removed to the Peterson house and the doctors examine him.

“It was found that the fatal ball had entered the skull midway between the left ear and the center of the back of the head, and passed nearly to the left eye. “A portion of the brain was oozing with blood from the wound”

“The assassin is known to be John Wilkes Booth. Booth dropped his pistol in the box. It was an old fashioned, one barreled Derringer of French manufacture, with a barrel three inches long.”

Account of the attempted murder of Secretary of State Seward. “Who this assassin was, is not yet known”

Details of the Lincoln box and seating, and the hole bored in the door for Booth to see, and the wooden bar Booth used to block the door.
