Vol. VII—No. 341. 16 pp. [433-448], four columns, w/numerous stories, illustrations and cartoons. Front page features a full portrait of “Major-General George G. Meade, The New Commander of the Army of the Potomac.” Page 435 includes lengthy paragraph detailing Lee’s invasion into Pennsylvania and his concentration of forces; closing with following statement, as of June 30th: “Gettysburg was occupied by our forces, and the report was that the battle would probably be forced in the neighborhood of Shippensburg, unless the Rebels fled west into the Vally of Cumberland.” [Given the slow 1863 journalistic news cycle, the Battle of Gettysburg & the Siege of Vicksburg had been decided by the time this issue appeared].
Interior illustrations include sketches of the Sieges of Vicksburg and Port Hudson, as well as a dramatic depiction of the “Capture of the Rebel Iron-Clad “Atlanta By the Monitor Weehauken, Captain Rodgers.” With stories to match.
Exhibits mounting dots along the left cover margin. All pages slightly loose, but still holding intact. Else VG plus, w/smooth unwrinkled cover. As the Harper’s Weekly issue appearing on the eve of Gettysburg, with the Siege of Vicksburg concluding as well, this particular July 11, 1863 issue makes an exceptionally fine collectible. [jp]
