This copy of The New York Herald is dated September 21, 1862 and covers the battle of Antietam.
Along the left edge are headlines that read “THE WAR NEWS, THE VERY LATEST FROM THE FIELD OF BATTLE, THE RETREAT OF THE REBELS ACROSS THE POTOMAC, MOVEMENTS OF M”CLELLAN’S ARMY, SOME OF THE REBEL TRAINS AND ARTILLERY DESTROYED, TWENTY-FIVE HUNDRED DEAD REBELS FOUND ON THE FIELD…” and so on.
Some of the other headlines scattered across the front page are “THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM: ANOTHER ACCOUNT OF THE GREAT BATTLE BY ONE OF OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONMDENTS,” “GENERAL HOOKER’S CORPS,” “GENERAL DOUBLEDAY’S DIVISION” etc...
The paper has darkened with age in spots and there is one small tear in the side at the fold. Left edge has seven small staples helping to hold the several pages together. These can easily be removed.
Overall the item is in good condition. [sl]
