Volume XVI/ NO. 136. 6 columns, 16 x22”, 4 pages. Exhibits light foxing round the margins, and is slightly fragile, but lays flat and clean w/no fold-marks.

Fascinating issue, published one week after the fall of Ft. Sumter. Full of bustling war news, reflecting the belligerent mood of New Orleans as the war began.

Highly cosmopolitan in coverage, the Delta front page contains telegraphed war news from papers all around the country—”What the Morning Journals Say”. To wit:

“The Bee notes the rapid progress of the last two weeks—the fall of Ft. Sumter, followed by the succession of Virginia , the resistance Maryland to Federal troops, and the protests of Kentucky and Missouri against Lincoln’s war proclamation, all showing the virtual union of Border states with Confederate States, and the utter futility of black Republican plans for subjugation of the South.”

Along with foreign intelligence—“It is rumored that France has sent a frigate to Charleston at the suggestion of President Davis.”—and a section of “Financial”, “Marine” & “River Intelligence. The fourth page lists a number of steamship sailings which serve to remind of the huge role the Port of New Orleans had come to assume in the exploding American commerce of the time. This shipping also underscores the importance of the Mississippi River in American commerce life of the time, on the eve of war and just before the railroad would bring the New Orleans steamboat-era to a close.

The Delta’s “City” coverage, with its listing of auctions and sales, also underscores just how deeply slavery was interwoven in the fabric and commerce of New Orleans. Three items, as follows. To wit:

“We are requested to call the particular attention of our readers to the sale of a choice lot of young slaves, taken for a debt of a city factor, which will be sold this day at 12 O’Clock at the City Hotel, by C. E. Girardey & Co…” [21 slaves in all, all black, aged 13 to 21, listed by name, beginning with Joseph, 19, a number one field hand. All guaranteed against the vices and maladies prescribed by law. Terms: 9 months credit for approved City factor’s acceptances bearing 8 per cent interest.]

“N. Vignie’s Sales—Good Saddler at Auction. Will be sold on Thursday, April 25, 12 o’clock a.m., at the Merchant’s and Auctioneers Exchange, Royal Street. BEN, a saddler boy, aged about 31; a good saddler and excellent subject, guaranteed in every respect. Terms: One-third cash, balance at 12 months; credit for approved endorsed note, and secured by mortgage with 8 per cent interest.”

“A FANCY FOR GREASE—A negro named Wash, property of Mr. Livandaus, was arrested on Front street, yesterday, for stealing two barrels of oil. The nigger and the oleaginous plunder are all at the First District Lockup.”

As for the war just begun, and Louisiana troops then assembling, the Delta third page lists two columns of notices to various units: The Perrit Guards—Orleans Home Light Guard—Diamond Riflemen—Scotch Riflemen—Rough and Ready Rangers—O.F. Cavalry Squadron—Delta Rifles—The McCullough Rangers—and many, many more.

In all, this newspaper makes a superb piece for New Orleans and Louisiana Civil War collectors. In protective sleeve, w/ white card backing.  [jp]
