Vol. XI—No. 559. 16 pp. [577-592], 16 x 11”, w/numerous stories, illustrations & cartoons. Front page consists of the story & and brutally graphic lithograph—“Whipping a negro girl in North Carolina by “Unreconstructed” Johnsonians.”
The story tells the tale of a former slave girl who, upon being beaten by her mistress, turned the tables and inflicted chastisement of her own. The word getting out, a group of neighborhood whites got the local magistrate to give the girl her option of going to jail or being whipped. After opted for the latter she was taken, stripped to her waist, and given one hundred and twenty six lashes with three feet rods, “one half to three eighth inches thick.” Gen. Dan Sickles had the participants taken into custody, fined $25 each and sentenced from one to three months hard labor.
Interior lithographs include one of “Sheridan’s Ride” [at Cedar Creek], and of old soldiers—“Talking Over Old Times, How We Won the Day.” Also a story and lithograph of Gen. Dan Sickles.
Exhibits chipping dots along left margin. Else near pristine. Superb Reconstruction-era collectible. In protective sleeve w/white card backing. [JP]
