No. 1000-2561/ Vol. XVI. 4 pp, 14.25 x 21.5”, five columns. Exhibits fold-marks, light yellowing, slight chipping at left margin. Else VG plus & entirely legible.

As the war progressed into early February, President Lincoln had placed Gen. Hooker in command of the Army of the Potomac, and Grant’s converging forces were stalled before Vicksburg. In Charleston two Confederate Ironclads had ventured out to attack the Union Blockade causing moderate damage.

The Courier front page is crammed with various war news, headlines as follows: “Demoralization of Banks Army—Constant Arrival of Deserters”—“Lincoln’s Proclamation Repudiated By the Kentucky Legislature—“Bragg and His Generals”—“Use of British Flags By Yankees.” Along with lengthy letters of Confederate army correspondence from F. Gaines, Ga., Cheraw, S.C. Plus “Camp Notes” from “The Second Brigade of the Light Division”, hitherto known as Gregg’s, now known as McGowan’s.”

The two center pages contain fascinating advertisements, including, sadly, slave ads and reward notices for runaways. To wit:

“Wanted to Purchase, Likely Young Negros, some good house servants, male and female. Also a small gang of Field Negros, for which the Highest Market Price will be Paid.

“Fifty Dollar Reward For Rachel, 21 years of age, black, 5 feet 4 inches high, and weights about 115 pounds; raised by Walpole on John’s Island; learned the trade of seamstress in Charleston; and has a husband working with Petit, the Tinner, in Market Street.”

Rear page features a poem, “The Gunboat Song”, and news and notices concerning the deliberation the South Carolina Legislature.

In all, a fine Civil War Charleston collectible. In protective sleeve, w/white card backing.    [jp]
