Item is a 3.50 x 2.00 inch card boldly signed in pencil “M. T. McMAHON, BVT. MAJ. GENL. 6TH ARMY CORPS” in three lines. Card has some light surface dirt and wear from age and storage but the signature is perfect.

Martin Thomas McMahon was born March 21, 1838 in LaPrairie, Quebec, Canada. He was a graduate of St. John’s College in Fordham, New York and went into the practice of Law.

During the Civil War he was commissioned a Captain on October 25, 1861 and assigned to the staff of General McClellan. While serving with McClellan on the Peninsula McMahon won the Medal of Honor for actions at White Oak Swamp. In January of 1863 he was discharged to accept a promotion to Lieutenant Colonel and assignment to the Adjutant Generals Department and for service as Chief of Staff of the 6th Corps. He ended the war holding the rank of Brevet Major General.
