FRAMED PHILADELPHIA PROMISSORY NOTE

$150.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 731-874

This pre-printed note dates from 1802 and is filled out in legible ink. The note states that Mr. Charles Francis Liot is refusing to pay the note held by a Mr. Pierre Payan. The document is filled out in French at the top but the rest is in English. There are two stamps impressed in the paper. One at the top and one of the Notary who processed the paperwork. The Notary is named Peter Lohra.

The document meas. approx. 8.75 x 14.00 inches and is in good condition with only light vertical and horizontal fold lines.

Nothing is known of Pierre Payan.

Charles Francis Liot is listed in the directory of Baltimore, Maryland from 1801-1825. He is listed as Commissary of Commercial Relations for Pennsylvania and Delaware and was from France.

Peter Lohra, the Notary who issued this document, is indeed listed as a resident of Philadelphia as is his father and Grandfather all of whom bear the same name. One was a soldier in the Revolution. As to which of the three of them issued this note more research is needed.

An interesting early Pennsylvania document.
