Autograph note signed – Thomas Hill Watts. Dated Montgomery, AL, June 29, 1884. Card measures 4 1/8” x 2 ½”; in very good condition, ink writing is completely legible. Mounting evidence on reverse.
Watts was born in 1819 and was educated at the University of Virginia. A successful planter who owned 179 slaves in 1860, Watts played an important role in the secession of Alabama, was one of the signers of the Ordinance of Secession, organized the 17th Alabama regiment and served as its Colonel until resigning to serve as Attorney General of the Confederate States of America from March 18, 1862 to October 1, 1863. He then served as Governor of Alabama from December 1, 1863 to May 1, 1865. Watts died in Montgomery, AL in 1892.
