Signature reads “Yours sincerely / Geo. Crook.” Clipping meas. 1 ¾” x 1” and is in excellent condition.
Crook graduated from West Point in 1852; he started the War as Colonel of the 36th Ohio and quickly rose to the rank of Brigadier General. He served at South Mountain and Antietam and in 1863 commanded a division of cavalry in Thomas’ Army of the Cumberland. He eventually commanded a Corps in General Phil Sheridan’s army in the Shenandoah Valley. He was promoted to Major General of Volunteers on October 21, 1864. He was captured by McNeill’s Rangers and taken to Richmond where he was paroled on March 20, 1865. He closed the war in command of a cavalry division in the Army of the Potomac and being promoted a brevet a Major General in the Regular Army. After the war he served fighting Indians on the plains, distinguishing himself in several campaigns against Indians, particularly in the battles of Powder River, Tongue River and the Rosebud.
Crook died on March 21, 1890 at Chicago while in command of the Department of the West. Crook Walk in Arlington National Cemetery is named for him. He was originally buried in Oakland, Maryland, but was moved to Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery on November 11, 1898.
