General Ward rose from the Mexican War ranks to Civil War regimental and brigade command, and temporary command of Birney’s Division at Chantilly in the Autumn. Promoted to Brigadier General, USV, Ward led his brigade at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, where his brigade performed heroically in attempting to cover the area from the Wheatfield to Devils Den, July 2, 1863. During this fight he was wounded, and took temporary command of Birney’s Division when the latter assumed command of Third Corps following Dan Sickle’s wounding.

Later At Spotsylvania, commanding a brigade of the 2nd Corps, Ward was wounded again. On May 12, 1864, however, to the shock of many his associates, he was relieved from command “for misbehavior and intoxication in the presence of the enemy during the Battle of the Wilderness.” In October, Ward was honorably mustered from service, which prompted many prominent friends to ask that he be re-instated and brought to trial so that his guilt could be ascertained, but Secretary of War Stanton preferred to let the business rest. Following the war Ward served for over thirty years as clerk of the superior and supreme courts of New York, and died in 1903.

Fine memento of a tarnished Union General who, nonetheless, had performed heroically at Gettysburg.
