C1880’S United States Senate free frank cover measures 5 ½” x 3”, with “United States Senate” printed in blue at the upper right corner. Addressed by Hampton to a “Miss. Dulaney / c/o Mrs. A. Willis / Metropolitan Hotel / City [?]”.  Signature at upper right, “Wade Hampton / U.S.S.”

Cover is torn open at the top.  Light soiling, otherwise in very good condition.

Wade Hampton raised his own Legion and outfitted it with his own money. He was wounded twice during the war, once at 1st Bull Run and again at Gettysburg.  He commanded a cavalry Brigade under Stuart from 1862-1864. After Stuart’s death he took over command of the Cavalry Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. In January of 1865 he was ordered to Johnson’s army in the Carolinas. He ended the war as a Lieutenant General.

Governor of South Carolina 1876-1879; elected in 1878 as a Democrat to the United States Senate; reelected in 1884 and served from March 4, 1879, until March 3, 1891; unsuccessful candidate for reelection; United States railroad commissioner 1893-1897; died in Columbia, S.C., April 11, 1902; interment in Trinity Cathedral Churchyard.
