Pre-printed 8.00 x 3.00 inch check filled out in ink and dated February 3, 1864, made payable to Captain John A. Parrott of the 34th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Countersigned on the verso: "Pay to Wm S. Dodge / John A. Parrott". Signed about three months before he was killed at Resaca, Georgia. Small area of loss at the top right corner, otherwise very good condition.

John A. Parrott was from Prophetstown, Illinois and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company B, 34th Illinois Infantry on August 15, 1861. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on March 10, 1862 and finally to Captain on April 7, 1862. During his time with the 34th it saw action at Shiloh, Corinth, Stones River, Rocky Face Ridge and Resaca where Captain Parrott was killed.

Some of the details of Parrott’s service are found in the following extract from the discourse of Rev. E. Erskine occasioned by the death of the Captain:

“At the battle of Shiloh…he was severely wounded in the head…So soon as his health permitted he was again with his regiment…But at length, at the battle of Resaca, in Georgia,…he was struck by the fragment of a shell from the enemy's battery, near the ankle, terribly mangling and nearly severing his leg."

The battle of Resaca took place from May 13th to the 15th 1864. Captain Parrott died of his wounds on the 14th.
