Commission is printed on vellum and is of the same decoration and layout as those issued during the Civil War. Item is clean and bright with three faint horizontal and two similar vertical fold lines. Large blue seal is present at bottom.
Commission is dated January 8, 1898 and appoints Arthur W. Dunbar as Passed Assistant Surgeon. Item is signed by John Davis Long as Secretary of the Navy and William McKinley as President. McKinley’s signature is very strong. President McKinley was the last Civil War veteran to be elected President and was assassinated in 1901.
Arthur W. Dunbar was a pioneer in Naval vessel sanitation and became the commanding officer of the Naval Hospital at Annapolis in 1927. He eventually rose to the rank of Rear Admiral during World War II.
Item comes housed in a modern frame with quadruple mat. Frame meas. approx. 25.25 x 29.50 inches.
