Pre-printed form, 17 x 13.25, titled: “HONORABLE DISCHARGE FROM THE UNITED STATES CORPS OF MARINES. “ With appropriate blanks inked in, the discharge states that “Thomas Reade, Private of Marines, who was enlisted the 22nd day of August 1853, at New York, being now about Thirty Seven years of age, five feet Seven & ½ inches high, having Hazel eyes, Dark hair, Ruddy complexion; and by occupation when enlisted a Labourer, says he was born in Ireland, is hereby discharged from the service of the United States, having served the full period of his enlistment.”

The document is “Registered” and signed by “H.B.Tyler”, Adj’t and Inspector at the Headquarter of the Marine Corps, Washington, 24th August 1857. Also signed by “Arch Henderson, Brig. Gen. Comm’dt Marine Corps” and by “FS. Walsh” for Maj. Geo F. Lindsay of the Q.M. Corps, dated August 25, 1857. An endorsement which acknowledges a sum “due Thomas Reade for clothing withdrawn, $60.92. When added to other sums, penciled in the margin, Pvt. Reade is entitled to receive $133.62 at discharge. On a reverse endorsement, Thomas Reade signs, acknowledging having received all pay due him during his Marine Corp enlistment. Signatory Archibald Henderson is the longest serving Marine Commandant, 1820-1859, and has been known to all Marines since as the “Grand old man of the Marine Corps”.

The document exhibits fold-marks and slight soiling along fold-lines, plus three miniscule dark dots. Otherwise VG plus. Magnificent Marine Corps collectible. Henderson-era discharges are scarce.  [JP]
