A native Virginian, lawyer James Seddon served terms as U.S. Congressman and was a member of the Confederate provisional congress. In the fall of 1862 he became Jefferson Davis’ third and longest serving Secretary of War, holding the post through January 1865, when he resigned due to poor health.
