Benjamin Butler was the Union’s most widely known “political” general. A prominent Massachusetts politician, he obtained a Brigadier’s commission in 1861, and is remembered today--at least in the south--as “Beast” Butler, for issuing the order that New Orleans women who spit on Union soldiers were to be treated as ladies of the town plying their trade. Highly controversial, the colorful Butler was no great shakes as a military commander and found it expedient to retire from the army of December 1864. During the post-war phase he was elected five times to congress and to one term as Governor of Massachusetts. A memorable Civil War figure was Benjamin F. Butler. Solid collectible. [jp]
