Item Code: 746-06

A very rare Joshua L. Chamberlain signature on a small piece of paper that includes his military rank of Brigadier General. The signature reads:

“J.L. Chamberlain / Brig Genl Comdg”

Though it is not dated, we believe how he signed it gives us a good clue of the period in which it was signed. In June 1864, Chamberlain was severely wounded, some thinking mortal. In honor of his actions, General Grant gave a full Brigadier General field promotion to Chamberlain. He didn't succumb to his wounds and actually was able to take command of his Brigade again in November 1864. In March of 1865, Chamberlain was given a Brevet promotion to Major General. At the conclusion of his signature, Chamberlain signs, "Brig Genl Comdg". This translates to Brigadier General Commanding. The use of Commanding is important, because officers only used this term during the war when in active command. As stated above, Chamberlain took command as a Brigadier General in November 1864 and was promoted to Brevet Major General in March 1865. So, this item was most likely signed between November 1864 and March 1865. Chamberlain War-Date items are extremely rare, with post-war signed items being the easiest to obtain.

This item is professionally framed with a reproduction photograph of Chamberlain during the war and includes double matting and museum quality plexiglass. The piece measures approximately 8” X 12” in size.
