Item Code: 746-08

During the Civil War, he served as a Colonel and saw action with Sherman during his Atlanta Campaign. He commanded a brigade at the battles of Resaca, Cassville, New Hope Church, Lost Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain, Marietta, Peachtree Creek and Atlanta. When Sherman's main force began its March to the Sea, Harrison's brigade was transferred to the District of Etowah and participated in the Battle of Nashville. War-Date items signed by future Presidents not named Grant are extremely scarce. Also of note, you will notice that Harrison's signature is a bit different than the one when he became President. During the Civil War, Harrison used what appears to be an "a" at the top and start of his last name. I have seen this present on all of the handful of Harrison war-date items I have come across. It appears he discontinued this practice later in life. Including Harrison’s signature, this item is also signed by Brigadier General William T. Ward! The endorsements read as follows:

Brevet Brigadier General Benjamin Harrison: “Approved / Benj Harrison / Col Commanding / 1 Brig. / 1 Div. / 11 A.C."

Brigadier General William T. Ward: “Approved / W. T. Ward / Brig. Gen Commanding / 1st Div. / 11th A.C.”

This item is professionally framed, to include double matting and museum quality plexiglass. Along with the endorsement, the framed piece includes a reproduction photograph showing General Harrison and Ward. The piece measures approximately 11.5” X 16.5” in size.  Though not dated, we can narrow down the timeline to between January 12th, 1864 and April 16th, 1864. After this date range, both Harrison and Ward were transferred to the 20th Corps.
