Dated August 17, 1864. Pre-printed form, “To All To Whom These Presents Shall Come,” etc. Measuring 14.75” x 9.5”, w/black trimmed borders, signed by Secretary of State O.M. Hatch and Allen C Haller, Adjutant General. This particular certificate promotes John H. Miller from 2nd Lieutenant to 1st Lieutenant, back dated to January 28th, 1964. Fine condition.

John H. Miller was mustered into service as 2nd Lieutenant, 3/17/1863 and commissioned into Co. “B”, 5/27/1863, promoted to 1st Lieutenant, 1/28/1864, and mustered out of service, 6/7/1865. Organized in August 1862, the 116th Illinoi was assigned to Sherman’s Army of the Tennessee and took part in the Yazoo Expedition and later participated in numerous battles leading up to the capture and surrender of Vicksburg; following Sherman on to the Battles for Chattanooga and the Atlanta Campaign and the March through Georgia and the Carolinas. Present at Bentonville, NC, and the surrender of Johnston’s army. Following the Grand Review of the Western armies, the unit was mustered out 6/7/1864. During service it lost 56 men killed and mortally wounded and 239 by disease for a total of 295.
