Letter cover is hand inscribed in ink, “JAS. S. NEGLEY / J R SIMPSON, ESQ / HUNTINGDON / HUNTG. CO. PA / PITTSBURG SOLDIERS CONVENTION / AUG. 6/72”. Cover measures 3 ¼” x 6”.
Printed letter features an image of U.S. Grant and letterhead that reads, “ALLEGHENY COUNTY UNION REPUBLICAN EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE / PITTSBURGH, PA., AUGUST 6TH, 1872.” Letter is an invitation to support, “THE GREAT SOLDIER’S AND SAILOR’S CONVENTION”. Letter measures 7 ¾” x 9 ¾”.
Both items have lightly yellowed with age, show fold creases and areas of light surface dirt. Cover has torn on lower right corner.
James Scott Negley (December 26, 1826 – August 7, 1901) was a Civil War General, farmer, railroader, and U.S. Representative from the state of Pennsylvania. He played a key role in the Union victory at the Battle of Stones River. [SL]
