Telegram on a South-Western Telegraph Company form. Dated September 4, 1861 from New Orleans, from J. De Baun to Col. French. James De Baun, a creole from New Orleans, enlisted in the CS Army in 1864 and served with Wingfield’s 3rd LA Cavalry. In 1861 he may have been some sort of gun dealer/broker as he is offering 1800 muskets to French.
In 1861 Col. Samuel G. French was appointed chief of ordnance of the state of Mississippi. He was later a Major General who commanded divisions under D.H. Hill & Longstreet; he also served at the Siege of Vicksburg, the Atlanta Campaign and the Franklin-Nashville Campaign.
Text reads: “Have eighteen hundred muskets at twenty two dollars. Do you want them?”
Overall very good condition; light scattered soiling. One small hole at lower left edge. [ld]
