During the Civil War, Harrison served as a Colonel and saw action with Sherman during his Atlanta Campaign. He commanded a brigade at the battles of Resaca, Cassville, New Hope Church, Lost Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain, Marietta, Peachtree Creek and Atlanta. When Sherman's main force began its March to the Sea, Harrison's brigade was transferred to the District of Etowah and participated in the Battle of Nashville. Including Harrison’s signature, this document is signed by FOUR Generals! The endorsements read as follows:

Brevet Brigadier General Henry Case: “Hd Qrs 129 Ills Vol / Near Atlanta GA Aug 2 64 / Respectfully forwarded / H. Case / Col Comd”.

Brevet Brigadier General Benjamin Harrison: “Hd Qrs 1st B (Brigade) 3 Div (Division) 20th A.C. (Army Corps) / Aug 5th 1864 / Respectfully forwarded / Benj Harrison / Col Comdg".

Brigadier General William T. Ward: “Head Qrs 3 Div 20 AC / Aug 5, 1864 / Respectfully forwarded / W. T. Ward / Brig Gen Comdg Div”.

Brigadier General Alpheus S. Williams: “Head Quarters 20 Corps / Aug 5 1864 / AS Williams / Brig Genl Comdg”.

This document is approximately 8” X 10” in size and pertains to descriptive rolls for the 129th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
