Eagle masthead promotion document pre-printed and filled out in ink promoting George Nichols of Company F, 39^th New York to Sergeant. Document is in good condition with 5 vertical 3 horizontal fold lines. Al ink is legible. Document is dated January 28, 1864 and signed by Colonel Augustus Funk.

The pension document is pre-printed and filled in with typed letters and gives Nichols a pension to commence in 1912. This document is clean and in excellent condition. There is also a small typed document informing Nichols of a pension increase in 1920.

George Nichols was 24 years old when he enlisted as a Private in Company F of the 39^th New York also known as The Garibaldi Guards. Nichols enlisted on December 4, 1863 and ten days later he was promoted to Sergeant. He was captured at the battle of Spotsylvania on May 12, 1864 and for some reason was reduced to the rank of Private that same day. Nichols escaped from his captors on April 1, 1865 and was that day restored to the rank of Sergeant. He was discharged at Albany, N.Y. on July 1, 1865.

Colonel Funk, who signed the promotion document was twice wounded during the war. Once at Williamsburg in May of 1862 with the 38^th New York and again at the Wilderness with the 39^th.
