A harness leather waist belt ( Gaylord type) bayonet scabbard and bayonet. The contract firm of BAKER & McKENNEY that manufactured this particular scabbard was located at the address of 141 Grand Street, New York City in 1864. This firm obtained an Army contract on September 17th 1864 for 10,000 sets of infantry accoutrements, of which this scabbard was part of that contract. The scabbard shown here is of the 1863 pattern which contains eight copper rivets, 4 of which are located on the frog and 4 on the scabbards throat. This pattern of 8 copper rivet arrangements, which superceded the earlier pattern of only 2 rivets, added to the frog in 1859. The bayonet contained within this scabbard is for the standard .58 Caliber pattern 1855/63 Springfield rifle- musket.

CONDITION: Outer surface of scabbard and frog are supple with overall light crazing. Brass tip in place with all pins present. The face of the frog has the contractors name impressed, plus inspector’s initials of F.M.M. Opposite side of the frog show the letter B stamped on the frog section and also on throat. There is a 1” split in the leather located on the inner face of the frog.
