This accoutrement is an original angular socket bayonet made for the Martini-Henry breech-loading, single-shot, lever-activated rifle adopted by the British army. Circa 1881 to 1888, the socket bay was the standard accoutrement for the army during the notable Zulu War in 1879.

Steel blade is a triangular tapered with fullers on each face. Sports a 3” long socket fitted with a locking ring. Retains old dark bluing on the socket while the blade bears a mottled gray finish with scattered peppery pitting overall. Blade measures 21 5/8” long and has a number of stampings on the face below the neck.

The black leather scabbard is of buff and maintains has a strong triangular body mounted with a brass throat, clasp hook and tip. Leather body is in good condition. Stitching is slightly loose at the upper end. Throat and tip tight to the body.
