[See Watts & White, THE BAYONET BOOK, P. 423, No. 889. Maker-mark: “Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicoppee/ Mass. / 1861”. This knife bayonet was produced for the U.S. Navy rifle M1861 [Plymouth/Whitneyville.] Overall length 16.75”, blade 12”. Width length at base: 1.625”. Wooden handle with brass crossguard & back strap/hilt.
The light gray blade exhibits light darkened pitting along top edge and the upper third of the lower cutting edge. Solid hilt assembly with slight separation where wooden grip meets cross-guard. Numerals “7059” carved in the grip reverse-side. Brass-work displays medium coppery patina with minor nicks. Black leather scabbard exhibits light scratches, and some cracking near tip, which is weakened somewhat. Brass frog throat and tip display medium bright coppery patina. Tip is missing one attaching screw and is slightly loose. Else VG and attractive.
