Standard .58 caliber Federal bayonet originally designed for the Model 1855 rifle musket. Also continued to be used with the .58 caliber models 1861 & 1863 muskets as well. Manufactured by the Springfield Armory and other known Federal contractors for the 1861 & 1863 rifle muskets.
The blade measures about 15 inches long, the socket is about 2.8 inches long. The metal is in good condition with a somewhat uneven gray patina and no rust or pitting. Locking ring intact. “US” marking on blade; “U” is very faint. [mk]
