Item is an original Model 1873 Springfield trowel bayonet for the 45/70 Trapdoor Springfield rifle. It was patented in April of 1872.
Well- constructed of 100% steel, this socket bayonet was developed to serve double duty as a combat bayonet and an entrenching tool. It was issued in 1873 and was never considered a great success.
It has a 10-inch long x 3 3/8 inches wide blade with a reinforced spine and a knurled grip section. Some light pitting is present all over. Socket does not rotate. [sm]
