{See Reilly, p. 58—illus. 83B] Between 1855 a number of M1841 rifles barrels were re-bored to from .54 Caliber to .58. A number of these were modified with “turned down” barrels to accept socket bayonets, with front sights removed. With the New Jersey Conversion, a front sight was dovetailed into the bayonet socket so that when the bayonet was “fixed”, the front sight was in proper alignment.
This bayonet is 23 7/16” in total length w/20-.75” fluted triangular blade and 2.6” socket, with tiny “B” blade marking near shank. Standard locking ring w/attached sight on side. Clean blade exhibits medium gray salt & pepper patina, with plum colored patina to shank and socket. Locking ring nicely operable. Its unique sight is solidly attached. All in all, VG. Extremely rare. Superb bayonet collectible. [jp]
