SABER BAYONET FOR “PLYMOUTH NAVY RIFLE” WITH SCABBARD

$495.00 SOLD

Item Code: 1000-221A

This fine Civil War edged weapon is an original saber bayonet made for the Whitney Model 1861 “Plymouth Navy Rifle”. Approximately 10,000 rifles with these sword bayonets were made.

The blade is in very good condition and bears the maker’s stamp “COLLINS & CO. / HARTFORD / CONN” on the left or reverse ricasso.  Obverse ricasso is blank. The total length of this bayonet is about 27 ½” while the blade itself is 22 5/8” long.  Blade is semi-bright and clean with only light speckling and has no edge nicks.  The 4 ¾” long, all-brass cast hilt is secured to the tang by a single transverse steel pin through the guard.  The brass ribbed grip is strong and displays normal wear. Upper grip area is stamped with serial #4835 on the top surface. Inspector’s initial’s, “FCW” are stamped on the butt of the pommel, although the “F” is covered by a small ding. Brass has a mellow reddish patina.

Leather scabbard is complete and unbroken. Black bridle leather is rigid and in very good shape.  All but about the upper 5” of stitching has separated. Brass throat and tip are well rivetted in place. Throat retains its brass belt stud. Brass scabbard parts wear a dark patina.

This is a very attractive and solid saber bayonet set.   [jet]
