RARE CONFEDERATE IMPORTED ENFIELD P-1856 SABER BAYONET

$1,000.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-993

This British-made accoutrement is an original saber bayonet made for the two-band Enfield .577 caliber musket longarm. Bayonet blade measures 28” overall and has a 22¾” long steel blade with a single 15½” long fuller on each flat. All iron is an even dark brown overall with scattered patches of old surface oxidation. Blade has no visible markings.

Cross guard measures 4 ¼”. Quillions at bottom and atop muzzle ring.

Grips are checkered black leather. Grips show wear and shrinkage. A 1” chunk of leather grip is missing from under the spring on the right side.

Has “bird’s head” shaped pommel. Locking spring remains in place but “button” is missing. Clearly engraved on left side of pommel is the number “1251”.  These numbers are found on Enfield sets imported to the Confederacy from England. To keep components of a musket together, the bayonet, ramrod, and musket (on butt plate tang) were engraved with the same number.

A nice pattern-1856 Enfield saber bayonet with definite Confederate markings!   [jet]
