This is a true Southern-made saber bayonet. Overall length is just over 26”. Blade measures 21 ¼” long, is 1” wide, and has an unstopped fuller. The iron is an equal mix of light gray and darker areas of pitting and oxidation. This looks to have been a barn or basement find. Retains a good edge and tip.
Cross guard and handle are one-piece of cast brass. Top of cross guard features a forward-facing quillion atop a loop to mount the bayonet onto a rifle. The bottom portion of the cross guard has a rear-facing quillion. The ribbed grip retains good definition. The iron spring-catch and button remain in place at the “bird’s head” pommel. They are rusty but still work. The brass portion was probably cleaned long ago and is now getting a mellow patina again.
A nice aged example of a rare Confederate saber bayonet. [jet]
