According to “THE AMERICAN BAYONET 1776-1964” by Albert N. Hardin, Jr. only 830 of these weapons were made.

The overall length of the bayonet is 27.00 inches. The double-edged blade is waspwaisted and is diamond shaped in cross section. The blade surface is semi-bright with moderate scattered mottling and no pitting. Edges are free of nicks. Obverse ricasso is strongly marked “U.S.” over “N.W.P.” while the reverse is equally well stamped “N. P. AMES / CABOTVILLE / 1847.” It is believed by the author of the work mentioned above, that 250 bayonets supplied in 1848 bear this arrangement of maker’s marks. It should also be noted that there are two blade styles on theses bayonets, one with a narrow fuller and one without. This example is without.

The heavy cast brass hilt is unique in that the muzzle ring is located on the obverse side of the hilt instead of the top. The muzzle ring is cast in brass and is an integral part of the hilt. It is fitted with an iron locking ring that operates properly. The grip itself is cast with an eagle feather motif with a plain pommel. The pommel is cut with a short notch on the same side as the muzzle ring for accepting a bayonet lug. The base of the grip has a short guard that ends with two round quillons. One quillon is stamped with the inspector’s mark of “R.C.”

The leather scabbard has a body that is in very nice condition. It is strong and shows just a few lines of scattered crazing. Rear seam is excellent. Brass throat and drag are plain. Throat has button for attaching to frog. Brass is dark and uncleaned.

An excellent example of a rare bayonet.  [ad]
