M1905 BAYONET AND M1910 SCABBARD FOR THE SPRINGFIELD 1903 RIFLE

Item Code: 1037-194

Styled like the Krag bayonet, the Model 1905 replaced the early rod bayonets of the 1903 Springfields. Sturdy and dependable, the bayonet’s 16-inch blade compensated for the shorter barrel of the 1903 rifle. Straight-bladed with a spearpoint tip, this knife bayonet has a true edge and an upper false edge extending back from the a little over 5 inches. The 1910 scabbard was the standard scabbard for US troops in World War One. The underlying scabbard body was the same rawhide covered wood as the earlier pattern, but it was fitted with a cover of woven duck with leather tip that could be removed and cleaned. The wire belt hook was sewn in at top. This is a very good example with a crisp US and serial number on one side of the ricasso and an SA/[flaming bomb]/ 1906 on the other side, indicating manufacture at the Springfield Arsenal in 1906. The blade is smooth and shows about 80 percent faded blue with a little dark gray at the tip and a couple of lighter gray spots here and there on the reverse, with slightly more rubbing to the finish on obverse and two brown crusty streaks near the tip. The wood grip is excellent and still shows the milling. The pommel and guard show dull silver mixed with gray and brown. The locking spring works fine. The scabbard cover has a few stains on the outer side that might clean.  [sr]
