U.S. 1795 PATTERN BAYONET

Item Code: 1037-226

The large quantities of French arms in US arsenals after the Revolution led to the common-sense decision to follow their design in the production of new arms for the U.S. army and militia when the national armories were established in the 1790s, and contracts were given to various private makers by the Federal government and states such as Pennsylvania. The bayonets for these arms, and their variations over the next fifteen years or so, also followed the French form. This one is unmarked, but has a deeply fluted back, sloping shoulders, and three-step mortise with no base ring that might be mistaken for a French bayonet of the 1760s. This is a crusty brown overall, but has a good edge and point and the socket has not been distorted, dented or cracked, as so many are. Overall the bayonet measures 16.5 inches, with a 13.25 inch blade and 3 inch socket. This is a good example of an American bayonet dating from about 1795 to 1810 or 1812. It would be a good representative of the weapons issued to the early Federal army and militia forces, who used them right up into the War of 1812.  [SR]
