When the U.S. adopted the 1914 Enfield with its 1913 bayonet, we obtained some of the bayonets already manufactured for the British by American firms. This is a scarce 1916 dated bayonet made by Remington for the British that was diverted for U.S. issue and re-stamped. The reverse ricasso shows the 1916 date at top with two numbers below on either side and a light Remington company logo beneath (the company name curved inside a circle.) The obverse ricasso has series of British markings vertically arranged that have been crossed out. A “U.S.” has then been stamped twice, once lengthwise and once across the blade near the guard. The blade is subdued silver gray, with some light pitting and standing rust on the obverse near the tip. The point is good. There is one tiny edge nick. The guard and pommel are a mix of gray and faded-blue-turned-brown. Two small numbers or a letter and number combination are stamped crosswise on the grip below the forward screw and have traces of white paint. The scabbard is the Type-1 Tariation-2 with decent olive drab color to the leather body and brown mounts, showing some light gray on the scabbard tip. A scarce example of the pre-1917 Model 1917 bayonet. [sr]
