UMC MARKED REMINGTON SWORD BAYONET FOR THE FRENCH M1914 ROLLING BLOCK RIFLE

$145.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1037-395

This example is marked by Remington in the blade fuller: “REMINGTON ARMS CO. –UNION METALLIC CTG. CO. REM. WORKS, ILION N.Y.” The steel pommel and guard are smooth metal, a mix of gray and dull silver in color. The wood grips are good. The blade is a mix of dull silver and gray, and with shallow pitting on the upper third of the obverse that shows as dark gray. The reverse is better, but shows some pitting along the upper back edge and some aggressive cleaning.

At the beginning of World War One the French government contracted with Remington to start making its rolling block rifle again for issue to its service and support troops. The French government designated rifle as the Remington Rifle Model 1914, buying just over 100,000 of them chambered for the 8mm Lebel cartridge and fitted with sword bayonets, freeing up more modern weapons for front line combat troops. The bayonet follows the general pattern of sword bayonet supplied by Remington on its foreign contracts, though the exact dimensions were specified in the French contracts.  [SR]
