Remington rolling block rifles and carbines were immensely popular with foreign governments, likely because of the guns’ simple and robust construction. They show up in various calibers and with Egyptian, Spanish, Arabic, Turkish, Mexican, Danish, Swedish and other markings. Flayderman estimated a million military Remingtons were made from 1867 to 1888. Many of the rifles were fitted with side lugs for saber bayonets. This one bears some similarities to the US Navy 1870 rifle bayonets with a fish-scale pattern grip, birds-head pommel and beak, and curved lower guard with disk finial and has a slightly curved Yataghan blade, but is unmarked. The locking spring and button are in place and functional but show some corrosion. The brass hilt has a medium patina with coppery brown areas and scattered small handling dings. The blade is a deep bluish gray with area showing lighter gray from rubbing. The edge and point are good. [sr]
