This Federal accoutrement is an original angular socket bayonet made for the US Model 1816 Flintlock Musket longarm. In time, the M1816 was converted to a percussion musket and the accompanying accoutrements could also be affixed to the newer conversion. The M1816 bayonet was the first American bayonet to include a uniformly ground flute and the first bayonet to employ the “T” mortise in the socket. The triangular blade on this particular item measures 16¼” and has no locking ring on the socket. “US” is stamped into the flat shank. The socket measures 3” and is stamped with the number “21” by the mortise, and has a .69 caliber bore. The bayonet has a very dark brown patina.  [MK]
