Style often seen in photographs of Civil War soldiers on both sides! 8 ¾” single edged straight blade with last 5” with false edge on upper side of blade. Maker marked twice! Parallel to the blade edge is a 10 pointed star with “MAPPIN, BROTHERS” in an arc above and “QUEENS CUTLER WORKS/SHEFFIELD” below. Ricasso marked with same star and “MAPPIN/BROTHERS”. Blade is smooth and semi-bright with some very light scratches from keeping the edge sharp. Grip is formed by a pair of beautiful rich color stag panels secured to the blade tang with two small silver pins. Pommel is German silver with raised scroll/fan motif at top with grapes and grape leaves below. Cross guard formed with two German silver sections with acanthus leaves/scroll designs with a quillon on each side curling upward.

The knife retains its original leather sheath with silver throat and tip. Covering the maker’s sheath is a fine leather covering sewn over the original sheath. Sewn to the reverse is a buff leather belt loop with an integral top strap which would fasten to a brass finial on the front, keeping the knife secure. Sheath finish is approx. 60% with the balance missing. The original sheath tip is also through at the bottom.

Overall a great knife representative of what any Civil War soldier would have been happy to have.
