This is a superb example of the large D-guard Bowie knives that were popular with Confederate soldiers during the war for their multi-purpose capabilities. Knife measures 21” long overall, with blade measuring 15 ½” long. Features a wooden grip with iron D-guard and spear-shaped blade. Iron exhibits light pitting all over. Edges of blade are smooth and tip is sharp. Wood grip has two small cracks at the base which is common in such items, but knife is very sturdy.
No other weapon is recognized as strictly Confederate as the D-guard. Many of them were homemade or locally made for the owners. Originals come in all shapes and sizes, from extremely crude to beautifully crafted. [sm]
