CROOKES BROTHERS BOWIE KNIFE WITH SHEATH

$2,950.00

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 384-14

This is a very rare antique knife from a well- known, high quality early maker. Has a stag handle, fancy cross guard and patriotic inscription etched on the blade that reads, “AMERICANS WISH FOR NOTHING BUT WHAT IS RIGHT / O.K / AND WILL SUBMIT TO NOTHING WRONG”. Maker marked at the ricasso, “CROOKES BROTHERS SHEFFIELD”. Blade is bright and exhibits very light traces of mottling. Both edges show scattered small chips. Overall length measures 11 ¾”, blade measures 7 ½”.

Crookes Brothers of Sheffield, England was in business circa 1856-1893. Their firm specialized in elaborate, ornate Bowie and hunting knives.

Leather sheath is burgundy colored and has gold embossing on both sides, with brass throat and tip. Shows light wear and scuffing, otherwise very good condition.

19th Century Sheffield knives were completely hand forged, hand ground, hand fitted, hand polished, hand etched; i.e., completely handmade, using only simple hand tools. This was then, and is still, a top of the line investment piece.  [sm]
