This interesting item is a saber bayonet that was manufactured at Fayetteville for the Confederacy.  It has been cut down to make it into a fighting knife.  The remaining blade measures 8 ¼” long.  Grip and cross guard are cast brass.  Grip has a fish-scale pattern. Iron springs have been removed.  Small inspector’s initial, “M”, is found on the flat, top surface of the handle.
