Length of the sword it is approx.30.50 inches overall. The blade meas. approx. 25.25 and is 1.25 inches wide at the ricasso. Blade is bright with just the slightest bit of mottling scattered throughout. There is no pitting on the blade’s surface and the edge has one or two very, very small nicks. There is a wide fuller that runs from the ricasso and stops approx. 5.50 inches from the point. The blade is marked in four lines at the ricasso with “N. STARR, US, P, J.N.” The “J.N.” is for John Newbury. Records show that he inspected M1818 Starr NCO swords finished in 1820.

There is an intact leather washer where the blade passes into the hilt. The grip is leather covered wood with ribbing for a better grip. There is an iron ferrule at the base of the grip. Extending from this ferrule is an iron backstrap that continues on to become the pommel cap. The knucklebow starts at the pommel cap and widens slightly till it makes a 90 degree turn and widens into the counterguard with quillon. There is a slot cut in the knucklebow near the pommel cap for a sword knot. The pommel also has a capstan rivet at top.

One other thing that must be mentioned is that there is a name lightly scratched in the fuller. This is on the side opposite the maker’s mark and is found approx. 4.50 inches from the ricasso. Lightly scratched is “A. MICKEL.” The letters are approx. .50 inch in height and the inscription runs approx. 2.00 inches long. With the sword is an iron scabbard that has been japanned black. Approx. 2.25 inches from the throat is a stud for carrying the scabbard in a frog. The bottom of the scabbard has a very thin drag. The scabbard has exhibits some light wear from use and storage over the years. This sword is in very good condition and is still tightly together.
