Maker mark: “Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass.” Inspector’s mark: “U.S. / J.H. / 1859”. Bright blade measuring 35” in length, 1.125” in width at the base. Exhibits smooth silvery patina, with no dings. Washer present. Hilt tight and symmetrical. Brass-work displays medium coppery patina with light scratching. Original dark brown leather grip exhibits light wear. Wiring tight. “J.H.” inspector mark on pommel cap.
Scabbard exhibits bright patina lightly peppered with moisture & age spotting. Throat, carrying mounts and drag are solid, with the latter bearing numerals “44” and inspectors “J_” marking. Overall, a magnificent saber. ‘59 specimens with blades this sweet are scarcer than scarce.
