The blade on this saber is in good condition. The true edge has two small nicks which are spaced a good distance apart. The surface of the blade has darkened some from age but clearly etched on one side of the ricasso is “N.P. AMES-CUTLER-SPRINGFIELD-1837” in four lines. Beneath this is stamped the inspector’s initials “J.M.” The opposite side of the ricasso is etched with “UNITED STATES” in script over a floral spray. The original buff leather washer remains and is in excellent shape.
The grips are wood covered with leather wrapped in twisted silver wire. The back strap and pommel cap are brass as is the ferrule at the bottom of the grip. The knuckle bow expands into three branches and ends in a quillion that is stamped on one side with “W.S.”
The steel scabbard is dark or “browned” with two rings and mounts and a rather large drag. The scabbard throat is also present. There are some light scratches over the body of the scabbard and the bottom third has three good sized dents that are consistent with use.
Over all it is an attractive sword in good used condition.
