Item Code: E2393

Here in minty condition is an original enlisted Model 1840 light artillery (mounted) saber complete with its original metal scabbard. Termed an Ames Type 2, this variation has a flush guard on the blade side without the recess and its matching scabbard has a throat collar mount similar to the M1860 cavalry model. Blade and scabbard are both in excellent condition. This Ames sidearm was contracted for by the U.S. Ordnance Department in 1863 and was one of some 5,300 pieces delivered that year.

Clearly marked on the blade’s obverse ricasso is the strong stampings of “U.S / A D K / 1863.” Reverse ricasso of blade bears the 3-line, block letter address of “AMES Mfg Co / CHICOPEE / MASS.” Markings are off-center on the ricasso. This saber has a 32¼” long, curved, single edged steel blade with a flat top and a single wide fuller. Blade is in absolutely mint condition and exhibits its factory bright sheen overall. Has one small mark of age coloration at the obverse ricasso’s stopped fuller. Original leather washer pad is excellent. Blade has no nicks.

Brass pommel has a 3/8” high, domed cap and bears no inspector marks. Entire brass hilt, including the pommel has acquired a rich pleasing bronze patina. Original grips are strong, tight, and in excellent condition with a turned, wooden handle wrapped with black bridle leather and encircled with original, twisted, brass wire wrap. All wire wrap is tight and the leather is in mint condition. Brass hilt wears a pleasing, untouched, bronze patina overall.

The undented iron scabbard is in very good condition and exhibits a smooth medium-gray scheen overall. Appears to have been lightly cleaned at one time. The large, iron, ring bands are tight and hold the two sword suspension rings. Ring mounts, bands and rings excellent. Throat and drag tight with the drag slipper stamped “A.D.K.” Scabbard body has one area of surface rust oxidation 6” below the middle band and also exhibits a minor blemish at the brazen seam just below the throat. Throat is unmarked. This minty specimen of a mid-war contracted M1840 artillery saber is a true wartime artifact of our Civil War.
